Postmortem
Success:
Appealing Concept: The concept of racing against the clock in a familiar academic environment resonated with players. The relatability of midterm deadlines and the student experience was also a major success.
VISUALS AND AUDIO: The art style and immersive audio elements received positive feedback. They enhanced the game's appeal and helped create a captivating atmosphere. In addition, we added a "Halloween feel" to the game to make it more relevant to real life.
Difficulty Levels: After fine-tuning, the three difficulty levels are widely appreciated. Players can choose their own challenge level, which allows more players to experience the game, which they appreciate.
The Challenge:
Balancing Gameplay: finding the right balance between collecting coins and mission combat is an ongoing challenge. This required countless iterations and playtesting to ensure the game was both challenging and enjoyable.
Eliminating Bugs: As with any other game development process, we encountered a variety of bugs and glitches that needed to be addressed. Some of these issues were particularly tricky to find and fix. For example, we found that enemies in "missions" would hit stairs and get stuck in them, and we needed to tweak the colliders and make sure they flowed smoothly .
What We Learned:
Playtesting is invaluable. It not only helped us identify issues but also validated our design decisions and allowed us to make necessary adjustments.
Bug tracking and fixing should be an ongoing process. Regular testing and thorough bug tracking can save a lot of time in the long run.
Communication within the development team is key. We learned to streamline our communication processes to ensure we both were on the same page and working efficiently.
Next Steps:
We aim to expand the game by adding more levels, challenges, and power-ups to keep the gameplay fresh and engaging.
We'll continue to gather feedback from players to make regular updates and improvements, ensuring the game remains enjoyable and challenging.
